Maron vs. Stewart: Comedy, Envy, and Podcast Cycle

Marc Maron discusses his complicated relationship with Jon Stewart, filled with envy, early career struggles, and a lack of control over his talent. Stewart's success fueled Maron's resentment.

” He claimed, ‘I might be ready to have coffee or something, but I’m refraining that with you,'” Maron continued of the conversation. “And then he said, ‘I make sure what you’re doing is very imaginative, and best of luck with it.’ Just the painful condescension of that … it didn’t assist anything. And now he’s doing a podcast. So, cycle!”

Early Career Struggles and Envy

Maron has previously stated the pair had a rough relationship because the 1990s, when they were both trying to break out in the comedy scene. He had taken control of Stewart’s holding duties on the Comedy Central show Short Attention Span Theater, but it was terminated quickly after in 1994. Stewart went on to locate more success hostingThe Daily Show, cementing his name in the comedy world, which just led Maron to resent him more.

Stewart’s Success and Maron’s Resentment

“When I was turning up, he was this wise, cute Jewish guy,” Maron stated, adding that Stewart was a “regimented careerist” who understood exactly how to “harness” his ability and afterwards “maximize it” on his very own terms.

“I assume I had a huge idea in that I will become that I am and I always was, yet it was not entire up until fairly just recently,” he proceeded. “So Jon really simply represented that, and I was annoying to him.”

“Throughout my early career, Jon, who is about my age, was just almost everywhere,” he informed Sebastian. “My envy of him was constantly … I would simply shit on him, and to his face. It was just consuming. I could not get through a week without him getting on the cover of a magazine. For some reason, I saw him as, ‘If I might just have my shit together, I could be more like that guy …’ Which wasn’t true, due to the fact that I was out of my mind, and I was most definitely gunning for something else.”

Maron confessed that he really did not even get “into funny to be an entertainer or work as a talk program host or anything,” but that he wanted “to hold space and to talk my mind.” He included, “I liked funny, so I thought I can do that in comedy.”

Maron’s Podcast Offer and Stewart’s Rejection

“I tried to get him on early,” the comedian responded, prior to recalling a minute when he was “kind of saying sorry” to Stewart over the phone and informing him about his podcast. Nonetheless, Maron claimed Stewart told him, “Well, there’s no love right here.”

“He said, ‘I could be willing to have coffee or something, yet I’m not doing that with you,'” Maron proceeded of the discussion.
